Update on Roberts Bird Sanctuary: new native plants!

On Saturday, April 28 volunteers from the Men’s Garden Club of Minneapolis (MGCM) and the ACM planted suitable native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses at Roberts Bird Sanctuary. The event was the MGCM’s 2012 Arbor Day planting. Two sites were chosen: one inside the Sanctuary where ACM members and community volunteers previously had removed invasive honeysuckle, buckthorn and garlic mustard and the other just outside the Visitors Shelter where bare wood chips were being overrun with weeds. Thank you to the following organizations for donating funds to purchase plants: People for Parks, East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association, Linden Hills Neighborhood Council, MGCM and ACM. Thank you, too, to Outback Nursery for selling the plants at wholesale prices and Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board staff for help setting up the planting. The planting was a success and we look forward to working with the MGCM again on more plantings at the Sanctuary. To see more of the MGCM’s quality gardening, check out the Trial Garden across the street from the Rose Garden at Lake Harriet. The MGCM is open to women and men regardless of where they live. 2012 Garlic Mustard Pulls – Pullers Wanted!

Garlic mustard is an invasive plant that is easy to recogize and easy to pull. Help us reduce the amount of gm in Roberts Bird Sanctuary and William Berry Woods so the native plants at these sites can thrive. No pulling experience necessary. Saturday morning birdwalks at Roberts Bird Sanctuary: Two more chances! This Saturday, May 19 and Saturday, May 26

Steve Greenfield will be leading birdwalks at Roberts Bird Sanctuary on Saturday mornings from April 28 through May 26. The walks start at 8 am at the Visitors Shelter on the east end of the Sanctuary and last about an hour. They are free and open to everyone. For directions and information about the Sanctuary, click here.

The walks will be cancelled if there’s heavy rain or thunder & lightning in the area. We’ll try to give as much notice as possible on the website about cancellations.

Visit the Roseville Rainbow Foods Community Pavilion at 1201 Larpenteur Avenue West in Roseville on Saturday, June 2 from 9 am to 3 pm to buy and learn about Minnesota native plants at the Native Plant Expo & Market. Native plant experts representing ten organizations will be on hand to answer your questions about native plants and to explain how replacing your lawn with native plantings can improve water quality, help pollinators and attract more bird species to your yard. The Expo also will provide “one-stop shopping” for native trees, shrubs, ferns, grasses and wildflowers from eleven native plant companies. For more information, click here.

2012 Urban Bird Fest from June 15 -17 at various locations in the Twin Cities

Check out the annual Urban Birding Festival during the weekend of June 15 – 17 for a lot of family-friendly birding activities held at various locations around the Twin Cities. Activities include

Everyone is always welcome to attend any ACM Board meeting. The board meets the fourth Tuesday of the month (except June and July) at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis from 7 pm to 8:45 pm. The next meeting is Tuesday, May 22. We are currently looking for new board members. For more information, click here.

Christmas Bird Count Saturday, December 17th

Please join us at Springbrook Nature Center for the annual Christmas bird count (CBC). Interested folks meet there at 7:30. Here is what the National Audubon Society says about the CBC:

Each of the citizen scientists who annually braves snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations – and to help guide conservation action.

From feeder-watchers and field observers to count compilers and regional editors, everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Count does it for love of birds and the excitement of friendly competition — and with the knowledge that their efforts are making a difference for science and bird conservation.

Springbrook Nature Center is located at 100 85th Avenue NW in Fridley, adjacent to the Northtown Shopping Center. For more information on the Center, or for directions, follow this link.

We’ll be meeting in a new location for the program meetings this year: Beth El Synagogue, 5224 W. 26th St., St. Louis Park. Meetings are from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m and are free & open to everyone.
